What We're About
Our story is a story of a friendship which bloomed about 6 years ago and from this friendship, we kickstarted our business women's networking group called WomenBizSENSE on 16th June 2006.
Jo had this idea to start a women entrepreneurs' group sometime ago but she could not find the right partner in crime, so to speak. When she mooted the idea in early 2006, I was excited because working with women is in my blood. I've been involved with women's groups or women's issues in one way or another ever since I was an undergraduate. Specifically, Jo and I started this business women's networking group because we could not find such a group in Penang. We wanted an informal grouping of women entrepreneurs who could come together, share resources and pass referrals/business to each other without the restrictions which we found in some groupings.
The reasons were simple: many business women are mothers and wives. We have hectic, if not frazzled schedules. We didn't want to set up a network where we laid down tight rules - it wouldn't work in our case. We didn't want to women to come to our networking meets and be stressed out. We wanted it to be fun and engaging and at the same time, allowed women to learn from each other.
So our networking group is woven around our passion for helping other women, and bringing together women of different ages and backgrounds (with one same characteristic - they must be in business) to encourage each other, to spur each other on and to mentor each other as we manage our families and businesses.
Our name reflects this: SENSE is an acronym for Support, Education, Networking, Social Responsibility and Entrepreneurship.
